At Fir Bank we strive to create a culture which aims to inspire an active generation to enjoy PE, encourage each other and achieve. We provide a safe and supportive environment for our children to flourish in a range of different physical activities which is essential in supporting their physical, emotional and moral development.
At Fir Bank we offer a varied and stimulating programme of activity to ensure that all children develop progress physically through an inspirational, unique PE curriculum. We encourage all children to develop their understanding of the way in which they can use their body, equipment and apparatus safely and yet imaginatively to achieve their personal goals. All children have the opportunity to be physically active, maintain a healthy life style and using the medium of sport, increase their self-esteem. We aspire for all children to adopt a positive mind set and believe that anything can be achieved through determination, hard work and resilience.
The aim of physical education is to promote Physical Education activity and healthy living. Children are taught to observe and produce the conventions of ‘fair play’, honest competition and good sporting behaviour as individuals, team members and spectators. By learning these values our children are embedding lifelong values such as co-operation and equality in play.
We provide children with the opportunity to learn the life skill of staying safe in water with swimming lessons throughout Year 3 – at the conclusion of which children should meet the National Curriculum requirement of swimming 25m.
At Fir Bank we aim to provide our children with experiences which provide positive impacts on their futures by becoming physically active citizens to benefit their long-term health and well-being.
Pupils at Fir Bank participate in weekly high-quality PE and sports activities. Our PE curriculum incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop confidence, tolerance and appreciation of their own and others strengths and areas of development. We provide all children with opportunities to engage in extra-curricular activities after school, in addition to competitive sporting events with other schools. This inclusive approach endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being for all pupils.
By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. At Fir Bank we use summative assessment to determine children’s understanding and inform teachers planning. The PE curriculum is reviewed on a termly basis by the subject leader.
